Invitation

It is with pleasure that I invite you to attend the 32nd annual conference of the Australian Music Therapy Association.

Our theme, “Moving Forward: Promoting and Communicating New Knowledge” highlights 2006 as the beginning of an important phase in Australian music therapy.

Recent conferences have provided the opportunity to consolidate our knowledge and expertise. The 2004 National Conference in Melbourne acknowledged 30 years of “Significant Moments” in Music Therapy. The 11th World Congress of Music Therapy held in Brisbane in 2005 had the all-encompassing theme of “Lullaby to Lament”, celebrating music therapy across the lifespan.

In this, our 32nd year, I invite music therapists and students to consider, after 32 years of growth in theory and practice, our responsibility to move forward in our profession.

To move forward as professionals, we are compelled to communicate within the music therapy community new knowledge and practice in diverse areas such as aged care, special needs, young children, music technology and community music therapy.

To move forward as an industry, we are obliged to promote and communicate new knowledge about music therapy in the 21st century to the wider community.

The sharing of our knowledge, the strengthening of our cohesion through greater respect and understanding of the diversity within our community and continued advocacy for our profession is surely what it means for us to be “Moving Forward”.

Spring is said to be the best time to visit Sydney. We have a superb venue in the NSW State Library, which is next to the beautiful Botanic Gardens and The Domain. The delights of the historically significant Circular Quay and The Rocks are a mere stroll away. We know that in October you'll enjoy not only a great conference, but all Sydney has to offer.
