Cheryl Dileo, PhD, MT-BC

Dr. Cheryl Dileo, MT-BC, is Professor of Music Therapy, Coordinator of the Master's Program in Music Therapy, and Director of the new, interdisciplinary Arts and Quality of Life Research Center at Temple University in Philadelphia. She is a former McAndless Distinguished Professor and Chair in the Humanities of Eastern Michigan University and has taught at Loyola University of the South and the University of Evansville, where she founded the music therapy program. She developed and directs the Music Therapy Programs at Temple University Hospital and has worked as a music therapist at Compassionate Care Hospice.
She has served as President of the World Federation of Music Therapy and the National Association for Music Therapy and has held numerous positions within these organizations. Currently, she is the Business Manager of the World Federation of Music Therapy and Co-Chair of the Ethics Board of the American Music Therapy Association.
She received her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in music therapy from Loyola University of the South, and her PhD from Louisiana State University. She is a grant reviewer for the National Institutes of Health, the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine and the National Cancer Institute. She is the Principal Investigator of a large grant from the State of PA to support research concerning the effects of music therapy on multicultural inpatients with cancer or heart disease, and also the PI of an HIV and Music Therapy grant from Johnson and Johnson.
She is the author/editor of 12 books and over 90 journal articles and book chapters. She has lectured extensively in the US and around the world. Her research topics include: medical music therapy (oncology and cardiology), music therapy in palliative care, music therapy in pain and stress management, multicultural music therapy, international music therapy practice, education and training in music therapy and professional ethics. She is the recipient of the Award of Merit and the Distinguished Research/Publication Awards of the AMTA, and has recently received the Temple University Faculty Research Award.
